Meet Emma Smyth, artist extraordinaire! According to her mum, the 11 year old, from Holywood, County Down, was born with an artist’s soul.
Emma paints as often as she can and loves to visit museums and galleries for inspiration. When asked about her favourite artists Emma responded, “I like Neil Shawcross because he uses only a few colours at a time, and also George Stubbs and Jolie!”
This expressionist style landscape painting (top right) was created by Emma when she was just under 7 years old. The view is of Belfast Lough, sketched, then painted while looking out from her mum's 2nd floor office window.
In this mixed media painting (bottom right), Emma experimented with a variety of techniques. She worked in layers, alternating between adding acrylic paint, collaging scraps of paper and sequins, applying texture paste with a stencil and stamping with ink.
When Emma isn’t painting she likes swimming, going to the cinema with friends or going to the theatre with her mum. She’s also enjoying the sewing machine she got for Christmas. Her great granny is showing her how to use it and someday Emma would like to design her own clothes.
